Over the years, refineries have refined their production methods to maximize efficiency while ensuring a higher quality product. One example is the increased use of catalysts, which speed up reactions as crude oils are converted into finished products. As the use of catalysts became widespread, refiners soon realized that these reaction-inducing substances were quickly deactivated by metals naturally present in crude oil. To keep catalyst fouling under control, refineries also face the challenge of determining catalyst life. The chlorine content, depending on its level and the type of product in question, will affect the efficiency of the catalyst and thus the refining process.
